I really wanted to launch this son of bitch. I just had to. One of the reasons I fell in love with AWD was seeing a video of an old Talon Tsi (basically a Mitsu Eclipse) do an AWD launch. The difference is that I can't have my daily driver shitting out transmission parts like the talon in the video. So... whats the solution?
Well, the Sti driveline is STOUT. Drag launches with 600 HP have been done on stock everything staying together! So I started collecting parts on a college kid budget. Here's the list:
- 2005 Sti trans ($2100)
- 2007 2.5 MT Impreza 3.9 R160 open Diff ($120)
- Automatic Impreza Driveshaft ($100)
- The stock clutch and pressure plate looked terrible so:
- ACT Lightweight Flywheel
- ACT Extreme PP, Act Street Disk
- Trans > Axle Seals
- Kartboy Shifter Bushings
- = $2880
That was nice and I put 20,000 miles on it while thinking about things... I wanted an Sti diff because the trans put way more power to the rear than the Wrx one did and the open 3.9 would often spin the inside tire. It's also not the greatest for launches since it's still using Wrx rear axles and is the smaller diff/driveshaft. So I decided to go all in.
- 04 Sti Trailing arms, hubs (5x100 so I can keep my 5 Forged Sti BBS, Tokico Dspecs and brakes... More on brakes later)
- 04 Sti Rear Diff (Clutch Type >:D)
- 07 Sti Rear Driveshaft
- Replaced wheel bearings and seals
- JDM Forester STi rear axles
