How can I eliminate plastic use from my life?

If you’re like me, you ponder this question often. Especially considering that 91% of plastic isn’t recycled and about 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters our oceans from land each year. Here are five simple tips that can reduce and hopefully eliminate plastic use from our daily lives completely.

1. SAY NO TO PLASTIC STRAWS. (About 500 million plastic straws are used daily in America, and most of them are ending up in our oceans.)

2. AVOID MICRO-BEADS. (Once these tiny pieces of plastic make it into marine ecosystems, they are nearly impossible to remove and have detrimental effects.)

3. CARRY A SHOPPING BAG WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE. (Because who wants to get charged for a plastic bag, anyways?)

4. SAY NO TO DISPOSABLE CUTLERY. (Consider carrying a spoon or fork with you, maybe even a spork, in your bag or desk at work.)

5. BRING A REUSABLE COFFEE CUP. (Some cafes even offer discounts if you bring your own cup!)

These small changes can have a huge impact on the amount of plastic we use. NO, it’s not impossible and YES, we can start today. 🙂

  1. Tip # 4 and 5 are my favorites. I wonder how we can make it easier for people to say no to disposable cutlery…?
